How To – Weather Check-In Deck
These cards are a creative way to express your current mood and that of the other person in a playful way. This deck is designed to help you and the person you are talking to gain a more conscious access to your current mood and a better understanding of your emotional landscape.
We’ve all had the experience of the other person behaving strangely in meetings, or appearing irritated or sad. This can not only affect the mood of all participants, but also take the focus off the actual goal of the meeting.
In most cases, people try to politely ignore why the other person is behaving in this way, but sometimes a meeting ends in an argument, even if it is not actually about the topic being discussed.
A check-in deck at the start of a meeting is a great way to quickly gauge everyone’s mood and get the meeting off to a positive start.
The weather picture is particularly practical because it allows you to share your feelings in a very simple and straightforward way. You don’t have to explain at length how you are feeling, but can simply say whether it is “sunny”, “rainy” or perhaps “cloudy”. This visual representation makes it easy to express emotions without having to open up too much. It creates a good understanding of each other and helps everyone in the team to feel seen and heard – without any fuss.
Each card shows a weather phenomenon – from sunshine to rain to fog – that symbolizes different emotional states.
This is how it works:
- Draw a card: Take a card from the deck to reflect your current mood and make it clear to your counterpart.
- Meaning of the card: Each card shows a weather phenomenon that represents a certain mood or emotion.
For example:
- Sunshine: you feel positive, energetic and full of joie de vivre.
- Rain: You are pensive, melancholic or maybe even a little depressed.
- Storm: You are agitated, stressed or burdened by many thoughts at the same time.
- Clouds: You feel neutral, a little unclear or uncertain.
- Reflection: Use the card to think about why you feel this way and how you want to deal with your mood. You may also find ways to change your mood – like restoring the “sunshine” or seeing the “rain” as an opportunity to relax.
